解説 Definition

area はラテン語 area「平らな空き地・区画」に由来し、接頭辞よりも語全体で「開けた場所」という核を持つ語です。are や hectare も同系で、もともと敷地や作業場のような平らな場所を指したため、今の「面積」「地域」へ自然に意味が広がりました。
