Mark comes through Old English forms such as mearc, “sign, boundary, or limit,” and mearcian, “to mark.” These belong to a Germanic word family concerned with signs and boundaries. The participle first describes something on which a sign has been placed; from the broader idea of being distinguishable, marked also developed the separate sense “noticeable or pronounced.”
