Surrounding means being around something or someone on all sides, or existing in the nearby area. It is often used to describe places, objects, or conditions close to a central point. It usually refers to what is physically near, but it can also describe the general environment.

surround が分かれば覚えやすい語で、基本イメージは「ぐるっと囲む」。surrounding はその -ing 形が形容詞化して「取り巻いている→周囲の」という感覚になる。the surrounding area なら「その場所を取り巻く一帯」、surrounding environment / surrounding circumstances なら「周囲の環境・周辺事情」。nearby が単に「近くの」、neighboring が「隣接する」に寄るのに対し、surrounding は中心のものを外側から包む広がりを意識すると混同しにくい。なお the surroundings は名詞で「周囲の環境」なので形も一緒に覚えると強い。

ラテン語 super（上に）+ undāre（波立つ、あふれる）から成る surroundāre が古フランス語 suronder を経て英語に。元は「水が溢れて囲む」意。関連語：surround（囲む）、abound（あふれる、同根の undāre）。水が四方からあふれて包み込むイメージが「周囲の」という意味になった。
"Surrounding" comes from English "surround," which came through Old French from a Late Latin form related to "super" meaning "over" and "unda" meaning "wave." The original image was of water rising around something and enclosing it. From that idea of being closed in on all sides, it developed into the modern sense of being all around.
