覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
Start with the verb `surround`: it gives the image of making a circle around something. `Surrounding` is what is around the center, like in `the surrounding area` or `surrounding circumstances`. It is different from `nearby`, which just means close, because `surrounding` suggests being all around.
例文
The surrounding trees are tall.
周りの木々は高いです。
The surrounding houses are small.
周りの家々は小さいです。
The surrounding hills look green.
周りの丘は緑に見えます。

surrounding の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 super(上に)+ undāre(波立つ、あふれる)から成る surroundāre が古フランス語 suronder を経て英語に。元は「水が溢れて囲む」意。関連語:surround(囲む)、abound(あふれる、同根の undāre)。水が四方からあふれて包み込むイメージが「周囲の」という意味になった。
"Surrounding" comes from English "surround," which came through Old French from a Late Latin form related to "super" meaning "over" and "unda" meaning "wave." The original image was of water rising around something and enclosing it. From that idea of being closed in on all sides, it developed into the modern sense of being all around. A related English word is "abound," which shares the old root linked to flowing or overflowing.
