To surround something means to be all around it on every side or to move into that position. The word is used for people, objects, buildings, or natural features. It often suggests that the thing in the center has little open space around it.

surroundはsur-「上から・越えて」+ round「円・周囲」。roundは古フランス語rond、さらにラテン語rotundus「丸い」にさかのぼり、“ぐるりと円を作って包む”感覚から「取り囲む」になった。roundとrotundが同根。
Surround is built from sur- and round. Round came through Old French rond from Latin rotundus, meaning "round" or "circular." The word first gave the image of forming a circle around something, and from that it developed the meaning "to enclose on every side." Round and rotund come from the same root.
