何かに対する不満や不平を述べること。サービスや商品に対する不満の意見を表現する行為のこと。
A complaint is a statement that says you are unhappy about something or that something is wrong. It is commonly used in daily life, business, and customer service when people report problems or poor treatment.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず動詞 complain を知っていれば、その「不満を言う」内容・行為が complaint。形はよく似るので、complain の名詞版として結び付けると覚えやすい。a complaint about the service、customer complaints、file/lodge a complaint が頻出。単なる心の中の不満より、相手に伝える「苦情」「申し立て」寄り。似た形の compliant は「従順な」で別語なので混同注意。

complaintは古フランス語 complainte から入り、さらに俗ラテン語由来の complangere にさかのぼる語です。com-『共に』＋ plangere『胸を打って嘆く』が背景にあり、もとの『嘆き悲しみ』が相手への『苦情』という意味へ発展しました。関連語は complain, plaintive.
From Old French complainte, going back to late Latin complangere. This Latin verb combined com- "with, together" and plangere "to beat the breast, lament." The original idea was grieving or crying out in sorrow, and in English it later developed into the sense of expressing dissatisfaction. Related words include complain and plaintive.
