If something is surrounded, it has people or things all around it. This word is often used to describe places, objects, or people, and it gives the idea of being enclosed on every side.

round「丸い・ぐるり」と結びつけると、surround は「何かの周りをぐるっと取る」感覚で覚えやすいです。surrounded はその過去分詞形で、be surrounded by ... が定番表現。「家が木々に囲まれている」「街が山に囲まれている」「敵に包囲される」のように、四方から取り囲まれた状態を表します。cover が“表面を覆う”のに対し、surrounded は“周囲から囲む”のが違い。surroundings（周囲の環境）も一緒に押さえると記憶がつながります。

古フランス語 suronder（溢れさせる）から。ラテン語 super-（上に）+ undare（波立つ、unda＝波が語源）に由来。元は「水で溢れさせる」意味が「周囲を取り囲む」に変化した。関連語: surge（押し寄せる）、abound（豊富な、水が溢れる→満ちる）。
Surrounded comes from surround, which came through Old French from a verb influenced by Latin roots such as super- "over" and unda "wave." The earliest image was close to water overflowing or rising around something. From that, the meaning shifted to the more general idea of being enclosed on all sides.
