site はラテン語 situs「置かれた場所」に由来し、英語では建物の敷地からウェブ上の場所へ意味が広がりました。細かな接辞は薄いですが、situate や situation と同根なので、「何かが置かれて落ち着く地点」が site だと分かります。
Site comes from Latin situs, meaning "place" or "position," through Old French and later English. It first referred to a physical place, especially where something is built or set.
