A website is a group of pages on the internet that people can visit with a web browser. Websites are used to share information, sell products, provide services, or communicate online. The word can refer to one page or the whole online site, depending on context.

web と site に分けて覚えると定着しやすい語です。web はネット上のつながり、site は「場所」なので、website は「ネット上の場所」。1枚のページを指す webpage とは違い、website は複数ページを含む全体像を表しやすい点が重要です。homepage はその入口ページのことが多いので混同注意。official website, company website, visit a website, build a website のような形でよく出ます。

website の語源・成り立ち Etymology
web はクモの巣から転じて World Wide Web の web を表し、site は場所・敷地を意味する。二語が結びつき、オンライン上の「情報の場所」という意味で website になった。homepage は本来その入口ページを指す。
"Website" combines "web" and "site." "Web" was first the ordinary word for a spider's web, then it was used for the World Wide Web, while "site" means a place or location. Together they came to mean a place on the internet where information is gathered.
