「zoo」は zoological garden の短縮形で、zoo- はギリシャ語 zoion「動物」にさかのぼり、-logical は logos「語る・学ぶ」に結びつく。zoology や zooplankton と同根で、ただの略語でも「動物の世界」という核がきちんと残っている。
