longer
もっと長く
解説 Definition
longer は long(長い)の比較級で、「より長い」「もっと長い」という意味です。長さや時間を比べるときに使います。
Longer is the comparative form of the adjective long. It describes something that has greater physical length or lasts for a greater amount of time than another thing or than expected.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
long「長い」に比較級の -er を付けた longer で、「二つを比べて、より長い」と覚えます。long は1音節なので more long ではなく longer が普通です。longer than that、a longer rope の形を定着させ、最上級 longest と対にすると変化も整理できます。
Build longer directly from long plus the comparative ending -er. Because long is a one-syllable adjective, longer is the normal comparative form, not more long. Use than when both sides of the comparison are stated: this pencil is longer than that one. Without than, the comparison can be understood from context, as in I need a longer rope. The word compares either physical distance or duration. Learn the complete pattern long–longer–longest to keep the comparative and superlative forms distinct.

longer の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古英語 long(長い)にゲルマン系比較級接尾辞 -er が付いた形。ゲルマン祖語 *langaz に遡り、ラテン語 longus とも同根でインド・ヨーロッパ祖語 *dlongʰos(長い)が共通の源。関連語: length(長さ)、longevity(長寿)。空間的にも時間的にも「延びている」イメージが原義。
Longer consists of long and the inherited Germanic comparative ending -er. Long comes from Old English lang or long and ultimately from a Proto-Germanic adjective meaning “long.” It is related at a deeper Indo-European level to Latin longus. English has long used the same adjective for extension in space and duration in time. Related forms such as length preserve the same basic idea of extent.
