解説 Definition
「太陽」という意味での「sun」は、太陽系の中心に位置する恒星を指す名詞です。地球に光と熱をもたらす存在として、生命の源でもあります。「under the sun（この世に）」「catch the sun（日焼けする）」など、多くの慣用表現にも登場します。
The sun is the star that the Earth moves around and that gives us light and heat. It is commonly used in everyday language, science, and weather topics. In normal use, it usually refers to the sun in our sky.

sunは古英語sunneにさかのぼり、さらに印欧祖語の太陽語根に通じる語です。ラテン語solとも遠い親類なので、solarやsolsticeを見ると、「太陽」が言語をまたいで形を変えて残っていると見えてきます。
Sun comes from Old English sunne and goes back to a very old Indo-European word for the sun. Similar forms appear in many related languages, showing how ancient the word is. English solar comes from the Latin branch of the same wider family.
