stationeryはstationer「文具商」+ -yで、stationerはラテン語stare「立つ」にさかのぼります。定位置の店に立つ商人が売る品だったため、stationaryと同根でも「文房具」になりました。関連語はstation、stationary。
Stationery comes from stationer, meaning a bookseller or writing-materials seller, plus the ending -y. Stationer goes back to Latin stare, "to stand," because such merchants had fixed stands or shops. The goods sold by a stationer gradually gave their name to paper and writing supplies themselves.
