解説 Definition
宇宙空間で自ら光を放つ恒星、または夜空に点のように見える光を指す名詞です。空を眺める日常表現から天文学の説明まで使え、太陽も分類上は a star です。

古英語 steorra「星」に由来し、ゲルマン系の古い語です。明るく目立つものを星になぞらえる発想から、後に「スター、有名人」や動詞「主演する」も生まれました。
Star comes from Old English steorra, an old Germanic word meaning "star." Because stars are bright and easy to notice, the word later developed wider uses, such as "a famous person," and the verb meaning "to be the main performer."
