storyは古フランス語estoireを経て、ラテン語historia、さらにギリシャ語historia「調べて知ること」にさかのぼる。historyやhistoricも同根で、もとは作り話より「探って得た知識」の感覚があり、出来事を語る語になった。
Story came through Old French estoire from Latin historia, which came from Greek historia meaning inquiry or learned knowledge. It is the same root as history and historic. The word first had the sense of an account of known events, and only later was used more widely for narrated tales.
