law は古ノルド語 lag「置かれたもの・定め」に由来し、動詞 leggja「置く」と同根なので、核の語感は「人の前に据えられた決まり」です。lawful や bylaw も同系で、law が単なる抽象理念でなく「据え置かれた規則」を指すと見ると意味が腹落ちします。
