lawful は law「法」+ -ful「…に満ちた」から成る語です。law は古ノルド語 lag「置かれたもの」に由来し、もともと「社会に定めて置かれた規則」という感覚でした。lawless や bylaw も同根で、「合法的」が「法に沿っている」と見えてきます。
Lawful is built from law and the suffix -ful. Law came into English from Old Norse lag, originally meaning something "laid down," then a rule set down for society. So lawful first meant "in keeping with what has been laid down as law," and it is related to words like lawless and bylaw.
