解説 Definition
外国にある自国の領事館。領事が駐在して自国民の安全やビザ発行などを支援する窓口です。大使館と連携しつつ、現地での行政手続きや困りごとの相談にも対応します。
A consulate is an official office of one country in another country, usually located in a city. It helps citizens with services such as passports, visas, and emergency support. It is different from an embassy, which is usually the main diplomatic office.

consulate はラテン語 consulatus「consul の職・役所」に由来し、英語では consul に接尾辞 -ate が付いた形です。consul はラテン語 consul にさかのぼり、consult と同系と考えられます。つまり「領事の職務の場」から領事館の意味になりました。
Consulate comes from Latin consulatus, meaning "the office or rank of a consul." In English it developed from consul with the ending -ate. The word first referred to the consul's office or term, and later to the place where a consul carries out official duties.
