解説 Definition
この語は学部課程を中心に教育を行う単科系の高等教育機関を指します。総合大学とくらべて特定の分野に集中していることが多く、場所によっては短期大学や専門学校に近い扱いになることもあります。高校卒業後に進む学校として広く知られています。
A college is a school for higher education where students study after finishing high school. It usually offers courses in many subjects and can give degrees or other qualifications. In American English, it often means a university or one part of a university.

school より先の段階にある学びの場、と置くと覚えやすい語です。米語では college が「大学」全般をかなり広く指し、go to college, be in college, a college student, a college degree のような定番表現で何度も出ます。university は大学院や研究機関も含む、より大きい総合大学の響きが強め。campus は校地、faculty は教員陣で別物です。college of business のように大学内の学部名にも使われるので、単独で見ても「高等教育の場」をまず思い出すと定着します。

college の語源・成り立ち Etymology
「college」はラテン語 collegium にさかのぼり、col-「共に」+ leg-「選ぶ・任命する」から「同じ役目の仲間の集まり」を表した。そこから学者の共同体を意味するようになり、colleague や collegial も同じ「仲間」感覚を受け継ぐ。
"College" comes from Latin collegium, from col- meaning "together" and a root related to legere, "to choose" or "appoint." It first meant a group of people serving together in the same office or body. Later it was used for a community of scholars, which led to the modern academic sense.
