degree は古フランス語 degré を経て、俗ラテン語 *degradus、さらにラテン語 gradus「段・歩み」にさかのぼります。原義は階段の一段で、学位も温度も能力も「どの段階か」を示す語。grade や graduate も同根です。
Degree came through Old French degré from Vulgar Latin and then from Latin gradus, meaning "step" or "stage." Its basic idea was a step on a stair, and later it came to mean the level or stage of temperature, ability, rank, or education. Grade and graduate come from the same root.
