radian はラテン語 radius「棒、半径、光線」に由来し、radius に -an が付いた数学語です。radial や radius と同根で、「半径と同じ長さの弧がつくる角」と分かると、単位名が図形の姿そのものだと腑に落ちます。
Radian was formed from Latin radius, meaning "ray," "spoke," or "radius." It is related to English radius and radial. The name was chosen in mathematics because the unit is based on the angle made by an arc equal in length to the radius.
