スペインや旧スペイン領などのスペイン語圏で、市町村の首長や地方行政官を指す語。歴史的には行政権や司法権を持つ役職を指す場合もある。

alcalde はスペイン語から入り、その源流はアラビア語 al-qadi「裁く人・判事」です。al- は定冠詞、qadi は「判断する人」で、町の長がもともと「裁きを行う役職」だったことが見え、qadi や cadi が同根語です。
Alcalde came into English from Spanish, from Arabic al-qadi, meaning "the judge." In that Arabic form, al- is "the" and qadi means a person who decides or judges. The word shows that the town official was originally seen as a judicial officer; qadi and cadi are related forms.
