goiter はフランス語 goitre を経て、古プロヴァンス語 goitron「のど」に由来し、さらに俗ラテン語を通じてラテン語 guttur「のど」へさかのぼります。首の前が腫れて見える病気を「のどのふくらみ」と呼んだ語なので、意味のつながりが自然です。関連語は guttural, goitrous。
