協奏曲やアリアなどで、伴奏が弱まるか止まったところに現れる、独奏者が高度な技巧や表現力を自由に示すための華やかな独奏部分を指す音楽用語。
A cadenza is a brilliant solo passage in a piece of music, often near the end of a movement in a concerto. It gives the performer a chance to show technical skill and expressive style. The term is mainly used in classical music.

「cadenza」はイタリア語で、もとはcadenza「終止・落下」で、ラテン語cadere「落ちる」に由来します。語幹cad-に名詞語尾-enzaがつき、`cadence`や`chance`も同根。音が“落ち着いて着地する”感覚から、締めくくりの華やかな独奏部を指すようになりました。
Cadenza comes from Italian cadenza, which originally meant "cadence" or "falling." It goes back to Latin cadere, meaning "to fall," and it is related to English cadence. From the idea of music falling to a close or resting point, it came to mean the solo passage near the end of a section.
