A chance is a possibility that something may happen. It is often used when talking about opportunities, risks, or how likely something is. In some contexts, it can also mean an opportunity to do something.
Memory Tip
chance of rain, chance that ...
Remember `chance` through patterns that show how strong the possibility is: `a good chance`, `little chance`, `no chance`. Very common shapes are `chance of ...` and `chance that ...`. It sounds more natural in conversation than the more formal `probability`.
例文
There is a chance of rain.

We have a small chance.

解説 Definition
A suitable time or situation that allows someone to do or get something. It can also refer to someone's turn to act or take part.
Memory Tip
Picture a moment when you finally have time to do something you want. Learn "a chance to talk" and "a chance to learn" as useful phrases. Focus on being able to take the action when that moment comes.
例文
I finally got a chance to talk with her.
This job is a great chance to learn new skills.
Don't miss the chance to visit Kyoto in spring.

Etymology
"Chance" comes from Old French cheance and goes back to Late Latin cadentia, meaning "a falling," from cadere, "to fall." The original image was how dice fall, so it was strongly linked with accident and luck. From that idea, it came to mean an event that happens unpredictably. Related words from the same root include "accident" and "cadence."
