chancy は chance「偶然・成り行き」に形容詞語尾 -y が付いた語で、chance は古フランス語を経てラテン語 cadere「落ちる」に由来します。accident や occasion も同根で、「何が自分に降りかかるか次第」という発想から、運任せで危うい意味になりました。
Chancy comes from chance with the adjective ending -y. Chance came through Old French from Latin cadere, meaning "to fall," with the older idea of something that happens or falls to a person.
