war は古フランス語 werre、さらにゲルマン系の語根 *werra「混乱・争い」に由来し、もとは秩序が崩れた騒乱でした。warrior や warfare も同系で、war が英雄的な響きより先に「世が乱れる状態」を表す語だと分かります。
