thyroid はギリシャ語 thyreoeidēs に由来し、thyreos「盾」+ -oid「〜の形をした」から成ります。もとは喉の甲状軟骨が盾形であることを指し、その近くの腺にも名が移りました。asteroid や android は同じ -oid を含みます。
Thyroid comes from Greek thyreoeidēs, from thyreos "shield" and -oid "shaped like." It first referred to the shield-shaped cartilage in the throat. Later the name was transferred to the nearby gland; asteroid and android contain the same -oid ending.
