The thymus is a small gland in the chest that helps the body develop its immune system, especially during childhood. It is mainly used in biology and medical contexts. The thymus becomes less active as a person gets older.

thymus はギリシャ語 thymos / thymon に由来し、香草 thyme と同根とされる。胸腺が小さなタイムの束のように見えることから名づけられたとされ、形から名称が生まれた語だとわかる。thyme や thymic が関連語。
