pinionは古フランス語pignon/pinionを経て、ラテン語pinna「羽・翼」にさかのぼります。もとは「翼の先の羽」で、そこから張り出した小部品や歯車名にも広がったため、pinnacleやpinnateと同じく「羽のように突き出る形」が核だと見えます。
