An ellipsis is the punctuation mark made of three dots. It is used to show that words have been left out or that a thought is unfinished or trailing off. In writing, it can also create a pause or a quiet, uncertain feeling.

ellipsis はまず見た目で固定すると覚えやすい語です。実際に文中で「...」を見たら ellipsis を思い出すようにすると定着します。意味は「何かを全部言わず、途中を落とす」。メールや小説で含みを残す三点リーダー、文法で語句を省く用法の両方に使えます。形が似た ellipse は「楕円」なので混同注意。elliptical style というと「省略の多い文体」で、ellipsis と同じ発想でつながります。
