ellipse は図形として覚えるのが早い。まず circle（円）を横か縦に引き伸ばした形、と頭に固定する。日常語なら oval に近いが、oval は見た目の「卵形」寄りでかなり広く使え、ellipse は数学・幾何でいう正確な「楕円」。planetary orbit, draw an ellipse, elliptical shape のまとまりで覚えると使い所も残る。elliptical（楕円の）まで一緒に押さえると派生も見抜きやすい。ellipsis とつづりが非常に近いので、図形か記号かで切り分ける。
