shape は古英語 gesceap「形、創造されたもの、状態」に由来し、sceppan「作る・形づくる」と関係します。つまり shape の核は「作られてそうなった姿」。そこからまず、物の輪郭や見た目としての「形、形状」を表します。reshape や shapely も同じ形づくる感覚を持つ語です。
