shapeは古英語gesceapに由来し、ge-（結果をまとめる接頭辞）+ scap「作る・形づくる」と見られます。つまりshapeは見た目だけでなく「作られてそうなった姿」で、形と作ることが近い理由が見えてきます。reshapeやshapelyも同じ核です。
