impact はラテン語 impingere「中へ打ち込む」にさかのぼり、in-「中へ」+ pangere「固定する」から成ります。語根の感覚は「強くぶつけて食い込ませる」で、compact や pact も同根。物理的な衝突が、心や状況への「影響する」に広がったと分かります。
