Arabicはラテン語Arabicus（アラビアの）から。語根はセム語系のʿarab（砂漠の遊牧民）に由来し、広大な砂漠に住む人々を指した。関連語：arabesque（アラベスク模様）。アラビア半島の民族名がそのまま言語名になった。
"Arabic" comes from Latin "Arabicus," meaning "Arabian" or "of Arabia." The deeper root is a Semitic word "arab," which referred to desert people or nomads. From the name of the people and region, the word later became the name of the language as well. A related English word is "arabesque."
