ecliptic
黄道
解説 Definition
The ecliptic is the apparent path that the sun follows across the sky during the year, as seen from Earth. It is an astronomy term and is also important for understanding the positions of planets and the zodiac. The word is mainly used in scientific or educational contexts.
Memory Tip
the ecliptic, plane of the ecliptic
This word is easier if you already know `eclipse`. Think of the sun's path in the sky, the line connected with eclipses and with where planets seem to move. That is why `ecliptic` often appears with astronomy words like `zodiac`. Be careful not to confuse it with `elliptic` or `elliptical`, which are about shape, not a path in the sky.

Etymology
Ecliptic comes from Greek ekleiptikos, meaning "connected with an eclipse." It is related to ekleipsis, the source of eclipse, from ek- "out" and leipein "to leave" or "fail," a root also seen in ellipsis. It was used for the sun's apparent path because eclipses were observed to happen along that line.
