黄道十二宮とは、太陽が一年間に天球上を移動する経路（黄道）を12等分し、それぞれに星座を割り当てた占星術の体系のことである。牡羊座から魚座までの12の星座が含まれており、誕生日によって各人の星座が決まる。占星術では、これらの星座が性格や運命に影響を与えるとされている。
The zodiac is a group of star signs or constellations connected with astrology. People often use the word when talking about birth signs and personality types. In astronomy, it can also refer to the belt of the sky through which the sun, moon, and planets seem to move.

zodiac の語源・成り立ち Etymology
zodiac はラテン語 zodiacus を経て、ギリシャ語 zōidiakos「小さな動物たちの輪」にさかのぼる。zōidion は zōion「動物」の縮小形で、zoo と同根だから、星座を動物の並びとして見た発想から「黄道帯」の語になった。
Zodiac came into English through Latin zodiacus, from Greek zōidiakos. That Greek word meant something like "circle of little animals," from zōidion, a small form of zōion, "animal." The name came from the band of stars marked by animal figures in the sky. The root is also seen in English zoo.
