zodiac の語源・成り立ち Etymology
zodiac はラテン語 zodiacus を経て、ギリシャ語 zōidiakos「小さな動物たちの輪」にさかのぼる。zōidion は zōion「動物」の縮小形で、zoo と同根だから、星座を動物の並びとして見た発想から「黄道帯」の語になった。
Zodiac came into English through Latin zodiacus, from Greek zōidiakos. That Greek word meant something like "circle of little animals," from zōidion, a small form of zōion, "animal." The name came from the band of stars marked by animal figures in the sky. The root is also seen in English zoo.
