覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
contrastingは原形contrastに-ingをそのまま付け、形容詞として「並べると違いが際立つ」を表します。発音もcontrastの後に /ɪŋ/ を加えます。contra-「反対」と「並んで立つ」という語源像から、contrasting colors、views、personalitiesのように、二者の差が互いを目立たせる場面で覚えます。
Contrasting is contrast plus -ing, with no spelling change; the ending is pronounced /ɪŋ/. As an adjective, it describes things whose differences become especially clear when they are placed or considered together. Use the historical image of elements “standing against” one another: black and white are contrasting colors, candidates may express contrasting views, and twins can have contrasting personalities. Unlike different, which merely reports a lack of sameness, contrasting often suggests an intentional or noticeable side-by-side opposition. Keep contrast as the base word and connect the adjective to the pattern contrasting A and B.

contrasting の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 contra(反対に)+ stare(立つ)→中世ラテン語 contrastare に由来。「反対側に立つ」が原義で、二つのものを並べて違いを際立たせる意味に発展した。関連語: contrast(対比)、contrary(反対の)。対立して立つイメージが「対照的な」の意味を自然に生んでいる。
Contrasting is formed from contrast by adding the participial suffix -ing. Contrast came into English through French and Italian forms derived from Medieval Latin contrastare, “to stand against.” That verb combines Latin contra, “against” or “opposite,” with stare, “to stand.” The physical image of things standing on opposing sides developed into the idea of comparing them so their differences become prominent. The adjective contrasting now describes qualities or items that create such a visible or conceptual opposition.
