contrast の語源・成り立ち Etymology
フランス語 contraster、さらに俗ラテン語 *contrastare に由来し、contra-「向かい合って」+ stare「立つ」から成ります。つまり『並べて立たせ、差をはっきり見せる』のが原感覚で、contrary や stable も同じ系統です。
Contrast comes through French contraster from Vulgar Latin *contrastare. It is formed from contra-, meaning “against” or “opposite,” and stare, meaning “to stand.” The original idea is of things standing opposite each other so their differences become clear.
