contradicting はラテン語 contradicere にさかのぼり、contra「反対に」+ dicere「言う」から成る。つまり原義は「言い返す・逆らって述べる」で、contradiction や dictionary と同じ dic- を持ち、発言どうしが食い違う→「矛盾している」になった。
