航空機の副操縦士。主操縦士を補佐して飛行を行う乗務員。
A copilot is the second pilot who helps fly an aircraft and supports the main pilot. More generally, the word can also mean a person or system that assists the main operator in doing a task.

pilot が「操縦士」だと分かれば、co- は coworker や coauthor と同じ「共同の・一緒に」の感覚。だから copilot は「操縦を一緒に担う人」→「副操縦士」と自然につながります。機内でただ隣に座る人ではなく、captain / pilot を補佐し、必要なら操縦も引き継ぐ役。autopilot が「自動操縦装置」なのに対し、copilot は人だと対比すると混同しにくいです。
If you know `pilot`, just add `co-`, which means "together" like in `coworker` or `coauthor`. So a `copilot` is the person who helps share the flying job. A useful contrast is `autopilot`, which is a system, not a person.
