coauthor は co-「共に」+ author で、author はラテン語 auctor「生み出す人・保証人」、さらに augere「増やす」へさかのぼります。作品を一緒に“増やし、世に出す人”と捉えると語感が深まり、authority や augment も同じ語根の仲間です。
