sign はラテン語 signum「しるし、目印」が古フランス語を経て入った語で、語根 sign- 自体が「印」を表します。目に見える印が、見えない事実を知らせるから「兆候」にもなるわけで、signal や signature にも同じ“しるし”の発想があります。
