traffic はイタリア語 traffico「商い・往来」に由来し、その奥にアラビア語 tafriq「分配」があるとされます。物を動かしてやり取りする感覚から「取引」と「交通」の両方が生まれ、trafficking や trafficker も同根です。
Traffic came into English from Italian traffico, which referred to trade and movement, and it may go back to Arabic tafriq, meaning distribution. The early sense was about moving goods from place to place in exchange. From that, the word widened to cover both commerce and the movement of vehicles and people.
