clue の語源・成り立ち Etymology
clue は古英語 cleowen/cliwe「糸玉」に由来し、もとは迷路をたどる糸を指しました。ギリシャ神話のアリアドネの糸の連想から「謎を解く手がかり」の意味へ。関連語は clew、clueless。
"Clue" comes from an older English word, clew, meaning "a ball of thread." The image is of a thread used to find a way through a maze, like in the story of Ariadne. From that idea, the word came to mean anything that helps someone find an answer; "clueless" is a later related form.
