覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
日本語の「クイズ」より範囲が広く、英語では娯楽の問題だけでなく、授業の短い小テストも quiz と呼びます。have a quiz「小テストがある」、take a quiz「受ける」、a ten-question quiz「10問の小テスト」、get a good score on a quiz「良い点を取る」を一まとまりで覚えましょう。
Use the familiar Japanese loanword クイズ as a starting point, but broaden its meaning. In English, a quiz is not limited to entertainment or trivia; at school it commonly means a short test, usually smaller and less formal than an exam. Learn it through classroom combinations: have a quiz tomorrow, take a quiz, a ten-question quiz, and get a good score on the quiz. Picture a teacher giving a brief set of questions during a course. That classroom image will prevent you from interpreting every quiz as a game show or puzzle contest.

quiz の語源・成り立ち Etymology
語源は諸説あるが、ラテン語「qui es?(あなたは何者?)」から来たという説が有力。18世紀アイルランドの劇場支配人が奇妙な単語として広めたとされる。問いかけが本質の語。関連語:question(質問)、inquisitive(詮索好きな)。
The origin of quiz is uncertain. It appeared in late eighteenth-century English, first with senses connected to an odd person, ridicule, or scrutiny, and its meaning later developed toward questioning and a test of knowledge. Stories linking it directly to the Latin phrase qui es? or to a Dublin theatre manager’s wager are widely repeated, but they are not securely established. The modern noun clearly denotes a set of questions or a short test.
