questionnaire の語源・成り立ち Etymology
フランス語 questionnaire からの借用で、フランス語 questionner「質問する」に由来します。question はラテン語 quaestio「探求、問い」にさかのぼり、quaerere「探し求める、尋ねる」と関係します。英語内部で quest＋-ion＋-naire と組み立てられた語ではありません。
Questionnaire was borrowed from French questionnaire, from questionner, “to question.” Question ultimately derives from Latin quaestio, “an inquiry” or “a seeking,” related to quaerere, “to seek or ask.” Despite its spelling, questionnaire was not formed within English by combining quest, -ion, and -naire.
