場所や集まり全体に目を向けて、周囲の様子を一通り見ることを表す動詞。部屋・会場・景色・人だかりなどを静かに見回す場面でよく使われ、細部を詳しく調べるというより全体をさっと確認する響きがある。話し始める前に場を見渡すような文脈にも合う。
To look over a whole place or group to get a general impression of it. It often describes calmly looking around a room, across a landscape, or over a crowd.

survey の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古フランス語 surveoir（見渡す）から。接頭辞 sur-（上から）+ voir（見る、ラテン語 vidēre）で「上から全体を見渡す」が原義。supervise（監督する）やview（眺め）も同根。高所から俯瞰して全体を把握する行為が調査の意味に発展した。
The word comes from Old French surveoir, meaning "to look over," combining sur-, "from above," with voir, "to see." The idea of looking over a whole area developed into the meaning of investigation.
