surveyor はアングロ・フランス語 surveiour に由来し、さらに中世ラテン語 supervidere「上から見る」にたどれます。super-/sur-「上から」+ videre「見る」で、supervise や vision も親類。土地を見渡して状態や境界を確かめる人、という発想から「測量士」になりました。
