古英語 trog「木をくりぬいた桶」が語源で、さらにゲルマン祖語 *trugaz にさかのぼる。もとは細長い木桶なので「飼い葉桶」を指し、形の似たくぼみへ転じて地形や波の「谷」の意味も生まれた。関連語は trog, German Trog。
Trough comes from Old English trog, meaning a hollowed wooden vessel, and goes back to an older Germanic root. It first referred to a long wooden container, especially one used for feeding animals. Because of its long, hollow shape, the word later extended to any similar low, sunken form, including valleys and wave troughs. A related form appears in German Trog.
