干し草

草を乾燥させた飼料。動物の食べ物として使われる、乾いた草。
Hay is grass that has been cut and dried to be used as food for animals, especially cows and horses. It is commonly stored on farms and used when fresh grass is not available.

hay は古英語 hieg に由来し、さらにゲルマン祖語 *haujam にさかのぼる、古い農耕語です。もともと「刈って乾かした草」という生活語で、ドイツ語 Heu も同系統なので、「家畜のえさになる干し草」という意味が自然に見えてきます。
Hay comes from Old English hieg, and goes back to Proto-Germanic *haujam. It was an old farming word for grass that had been cut and dried. The meaning stayed close to that original idea, and German Heu comes from the same family.
